Winterize Your RV Water System: Stop Freezing Pipes Before They Start

You’re about to store your camper for winter. If water is left in the lines, it will freeze and split your pipes wide open.

This article shows you how to prevent that. We will cover draining all tanks and lines, using compressed air to clear water, and adding RV-specific antifreeze to the plumbing.

I’ve winterized my own rig and hundreds of others on service calls. The one thing everyone misses is the water pump-you have to get antifreeze through it or it’s toast.

You’re Not Just Draining, You’re Preventing a $5000 Mess

Water expands when it freezes. Picture an ice cube tray. Water fills each compartment, then freezes and pushes against the plastic. Now imagine that force inside your rigid RV water lines. The ice has no room to expand, so it cracks the pipe from the inside out.

  • A burst PEX line behind a wall. I’ve peeled back wall panels to find these, and the repair bill is never pretty.
  • A cracked water heater tank. A new tank plus labor can easily cost over a thousand dollars.
  • A shattered water pump housing. The plastic casing on many RV pumps is the first thing to freeze and explode.

Your water lines will freeze when temperatures dip just below 32°F. Wind chill under the camper’s belly can freeze those hoses much faster, even on a day that feels above freezing. Don’t wait for a hard freeze to act.

Your Winterizing Arsenal: Tools and Safe Supplies

Get your tools ready first. Having everything on hand saves time and frustration.

  • Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Tire pressure gauge (to check your air pressure)
  • Hand pump or air compressor with an adapter for your RV’s city water inlet

The antifreeze choice is critical. You must only use propylene glycol based, NSF certified RV antifreeze in your water system. This is safe for drinking water lines and helps in preventing frozen pipes.

What type of antifreeze is safe for RV plumbing? The pink RV stuff is safe. Automotive antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is toxic. It can poison your water system and is a nightmare to flush out. Never use automotive antifreeze in your RV. The wrong choice can ruin your entire plumbing system.

How do you bypass the water heater for winterizing?

  • Antifreeze Flood (Pro): Foolproof visual confirmation (pink liquid). (Con): You have to buy and later flush the antifreeze. It can leave a slight taste.

Method A: The Air Compressor Blow-Out

How do you blow out the water lines with an air compressor? Get a compressor and an adapter that fits your RV’s city water inlet. Set the compressor’s regulator to a maximum of 40 PSI. Any more and you risk blowing fittings or damaging the water lines. Connect the air hose to the city water inlet. Open your faucets one by one, starting with the one closest to the water pump, then moving to the farthest. You’ll hear air sputter, then a steady stream. Do this for every faucet: cold and hot sides, shower, outdoor shower, and toilet valve. Don’t forget the toilet fill valve if you have one.

How do you protect the water pump during this process? Bypass it. Disconnect the inlet side of the pump and let the air blow through from the city connection. If you can’t bypass it, you can put a short burst of air through the pump, but do not let the pump run dry. The goal is to push water out, not to spin the dry pump seals.

Method B: The Antifreeze Flood

There are two common ways to get it into the lines. One, use a hand pump inserted into the antifreeze jug and connected to the city water inlet. Two, disconnect the main water line from the fresh tank and stick it into the jug, then turn on the water pump. The pump will draw the antifreeze in.

Run antifreeze through every faucet, toilet, shower, and the outdoor shower until you see pink. Start with the cold side closest to the pump, then the hot. The hot side will take longer as it fills the bypassed heater lines. Flush the toilet until pink liquid appears in the bowl. Don’t stop until you get that pink color at each fixture.

How do you protect the water pump from freezing? After you’ve drawn antifreeze through the system, disconnect the outlet line from the pump. Pour a cup of antifreeze directly into the pump housing and reconnect the line. This coats the internal seals and prevents any residual water from freezing inside the pump. How do you winterize the outside shower and faucets?

Most RVs have an exterior shower. It has the longest, most exposed plumbing run. Find its dedicated drain valve, usually under a nearby bench or in a basement compartment. Open it and let it drip dry. No drain valve? You must disconnect the hose from the back of the faucet inside the RV and blow it out. On my camper, I installed a simple shutoff valve on that line inside so I can isolate and drain it easily every fall.

The Hidden Ice Maker and Washing Machine

If your RV has a residential fridge with an ice maker, that plastic water line is a freeze bomb. Disconnect it at the back of the fridge and use your air compressor to blow the water back toward the source and out. Do the same for a built-in washing machine.   • A Faucet That Doesn’t Flow: You turn on the pump and open a tap, but only a trickle comes out or nothing at all. This often points to a frozen and split pipe blocking the water’s path.

  1. Start at the water pump. Check all the inlet and outlet connections for cracks or moisture.
  2. Follow every accessible water line you can see. This includes under sinks, behind access panels, and in storage compartments. Look closely at PEX tubing for bulges or longitudinal splits. Check polybutylene or PVC for brittle cracks.
  3. Inspect the water heater. Check around the drain plug and pressure relief valve for seepage. Look for frost cracks on the tank itself if it’s not a tankless model.
